The Game Plan

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 baking pan.

  2. Make the streusel first — you'll thank yourself later. Mix brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon in a bowl. Cut in cold butter with a fork or your fingers until it looks like coarse, sandy crumbles. Set aside.

  3. Cream softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.

  4. Beat in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla and sour cream. Mix until smooth.

  5. In a separate bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Fold the dry ingredients into the wet just until combined. The batter will be thick — that's correct.

  6. Spread half the batter into the prepared pan. Sprinkle half the streusel over it in an even layer.

  7. Carefully spread the remaining batter on top (an offset spatula helps here). Top with the rest of the streusel.

  8. Bake 40-45 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean and the streusel is golden.

  9. While still warm, whisk together powdered sugar and milk. Drizzle the glaze over the top in lazy lines.
