The Game Plan

  1. Make the berry sauce: Add the frozen berries, sugar, and lemon juice to a small saucepan over medium heat. Cook for 4-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the berries break down and the mixture is simmering.

  2. Mix cornstarch with water in a small bowl, then stir it into the berry sauce. Cook for 1 more minute until the sauce thickens slightly. Remove from heat and let cool for 5 minutes. The sauce will continue to thicken as it cools.

  3. Crush the waffle cones by hand into rough, bite-size pieces. You want a mix of big chunks and smaller crumbs for texture.

  4. Assemble the sundaes: Spoon a small amount of berry sauce into the bottom of each bowl or cup. Add a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream. Spoon more warm berry sauce over the top.

  5. Top with crushed waffle cone pieces and a dollop of whipped cream if using.

  6. Serve immediately.
