The Game Plan

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).

  2. Peel and cube potatoes. Boil in salted water until fork-tender, about 15 minutes. Drain, then mash with butter, milk, and half the cheddar. Season with salt and pepper.

  3. While potatoes cook, brown ground beef in a large oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat. Drain excess fat.

  4. Add onion and cook 3-4 minutes. Add garlic, tomato paste, thyme, and flour. Stir for 1 minute.

  5. Pour in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer 5 minutes until thickened. Stir in frozen vegetables and cook 2 minutes more. Season with salt and pepper.

  6. Spread mashed potatoes evenly over the meat filling. Use a fork to create ridges on top (they get crispy). Sprinkle with remaining cheddar.

  7. Bake 20-25 minutes until the top is golden and the edges are bubbling.
